Abhijit has music in his blood, being son of the renowned classical vocalist Maestro. Pandit. Ajay Pohankar, he also took training in instrumental style of Indian music from world renowned Santoor Maestro. Pandit. Shivkumar Sharma. Abhijit is perhaps the only Indian to play Indian Classical Music on a Keyboard.
Abhijit came to limelight with the super success of his Fusion/New Age Music album "PIYA BAWARI" in 2002.The song went on to become one of the most popular songs in the history of Indian non-film music. The album remained in the top three charts of MTV for many weeks. Abhijit is the pioneer of Indian Lounge music. The song "PIYA BAWARI" went on the international scene by its inclusion in the famous "BUDDHA BAR" of France.
Abhijit has so far produced more than 20 albums Nationally & Internationally with some of the most reputed labels like H.M.V, Times Music, Music Today, Universal Worldwide & Freespirit Records. His songs have been compiled by some of the top internationally known labels like Soundstrue & Buddha bar.
Abhijits music had exotic elements of Indian Traditional Music fused with Lounge & other World Music sounds, his videos were some of the most expensive & exotic videos and were considered a treat to watch. The video of Piya bawari was shot on the exotic islands of Andaman & Nicobar and won several awards.
Abhijit has a very unique style of making music and has successfully done so using Traditional Classical melodies. His works have been acclaimed by the masses & appreciated by Legendry Musicians too. He thinks differently & presents his music in a cool & stylish way. He is one of the first musicians to make Indian classical music cool & accessible to the youngsters.
Abhijit along with London based percussionist Talvin Singh has also co-composed the title track of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer film "BOOM". His song was picturised on the legendry BO-DEREK, again shot on the exotic beaches.
Abhijit is a flamboyant performer on stage having done many concerts around the world at some of the most prestigious venues like the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and have mesmerized audiences in India at some top rated concerts & events with his dynamic performances and collaborative concerts with some of the top musicians of the world.
Abhijit has been awarded by several institutions in India. He has received the Della Technica award for Excellence in Music, The youth icon of music award from Rotary Club and also the Tata AV max award for the best music album Piya bawari in 2002.
